FAQ: The Rustproofing Process Defined
Rustproofing is the process of applying rust-inhibiting chemicals, waxes or sealers to the underside and inside of the vehicle's body as well as any other rust-prone areas. Not to be confused with undercoating which treats only the underside of the vehicle. Commercial rustproofing treatments usually include a guarantee for a certain number of years, Rustblock® offers a lifetime guarantee on qualified vehicles when treated on an annual basis.
The Rustproofing Process
VEHICLE PREPARATION PRIOR TO RUSTPROOFING
Place floormats, seat covers, and wiper-blade covers to protect vehicle.
Give the vehicle a light rinse to remove any build-up of ice or snow.
Circle the vehicle and do a complete topside check for abrasions, dents, surface rust, torn trim, accident damage, questionable bodywork, etc.
RUSTPROOFING: INNER BODY PANELS AND DRILLING
Always minimize drilling by using existing factory openings (drain holes, vents, door mechanisms, etc.) to rustproof inner body panels.
If no appropriate access points are available, then a suitably-located access hole must be drilled.
RUSTPROOFING THE DOORS
Two holes will be needed in each of the doors, one hole in the upper section, the other in the lower section. This will allow adequate rustproofing product to protect the inner door panels.
RUSTPROOFING: ROCKER PANELS
For four-door models, one hole in the center of each door opening is usually sufficient.
In the case of two-door models, or four-door models with an unusually long front door, two holes will be required, about a third of the way in from either end.
RUSTPROOFING: WINDSHIELD PILLAR
Drill the lower hole at 45 degree angle in the lower elbow area to rustproof the bottom of the front windshield pillar.
RUSTPROOFING: CENTER PILLAR – 4-DOOR MODELS
Drill the lower hole at a 45 degree angle in the lower elbow area to rustproof the center pillar.
RUSTPROOFING: REAR PILLAR
The rear pillar of a two-door vehicle should be drilled at a 45 degree angle in the lower elbow as well as just below the window sill. Try to remain close to the outer skin.
RUSTPROOFING: FRONT FENDERS
This is accomplished by opening the front door and you will see an opening near the top of the fender.
RUSTPROOFING: THE HOOD
Most hoods have enough pre-punched openings for effective product application without drilling.
RUSTPROOFING: THE TRUNK LID
Most standard trunk lids have enough openings, and do not require drilling.
RUSTPROOFING: SLIDING DOORS
Two holes must be drilled in the sliding door, one just above the handle on the leading edge of the door, the other approximately 6” above the bottom seam. Drill at the rear of the door.
RUSTPROOFING THE VEHICLE’S TOPSIDE
Application of the rustproofing product should be light, to minimize dripping and waste of product.
RUSTPROOFING: HOOD – OPEN SPRAY
Lightly rustproof the underside of the hood. Rustproof the outer edges first. There is no need to spray sound insulation.
THINGS TO DO ONCE THE TOPSIDE HAS BEEN RUSTPROOFED
Grease and plug all holes.
Replace all caps, vents, etc.
Re-install tail lights
Put back all the items in the trunk and make sure all the linings are properly re-installed.
Close the doors, trunk and hood.
RUSTPROOFING VEHICLE UNDERSIDE
Using a spray wand, rustproof around the arch of the wheel wells, behind the tires and around the shock towers. Using the rustproofing gun, open spray the product to cover the rest of the wheel wells. Do not rustproof the brake assemblies.
Using the rustproofing spray wand, rustproof starting from the front of the vehicle and work your way to the back. Rustproof all enclosed areas which you will not be able to reach with the open spray: In both front and rear bumpers, inside cross members and framing, all body supports, over the heat shield, over gas tank, front fender opening, and any other enclosed areas.
Next, use the rustproofing gun to start applying the product from the front end toward the rear of the vehicle. Apply a thin, uniform layer to all exposed areas of the undercarriage.
Once the undercarriage has been rustproofed from front to rear, start at the rear of the vehicle and work back toward the front, checking the surfaces for adequate coverage. Rustproof any missed areas. Wipe any over-spray from the excluded areas listed above.
THINGS TO DO AFTER THE RUSTPROOFING PROCESS
Make sure the interior of the vehicle was not soiled, clean if necessary.
Wash the vehicle completely.
Make sure you did not forget any holes unplugged.
Drive out the vehicle, remove the seat cover, and change the floor mat if necessary.
Clean the brake, clutch and accelerator pedals.
Deliver the keys to the customer and thank him/her for their patronage.
